Is this really from the 19th C?

    Described by seller as

"F.Mora,19th Century, woman with basket of flowers
and butterflies, oil on board, signed lower right & plaque to frame, 40cm x 19cm"

But then I also saw they have the other one for sale of the man violinist also stated to be 19C but it is exactly the same frame and plaque. They kind of look like souvenir reproduction items to me. Like those spelter statues with plaques.
    What are people's thoughts?

Are any images of back of paintings avaliable. They might give a better idea.Note the picture of the woman shows craquelure ,while the second displays none that I can see.If they were a pair you would expect both ot display craquelure. (Only my opinion)

Unfortunately no other photos available at this time. I agree that you would expect to say see the same sort of aging none-the-less I do feel they are a pair. Same frame. Same artist attributed. Same plaque. The issue is more that I'm not sure how old they are.

Some of the more experienced Forumers always ask to see picture of back of painting, and rightly so,as the back of the painting can tell far more about the painting than the front.IMO.not showing pictures raises red flags ,so (Buyer Beware)

Yeah. Issue is I bid at timed auction.
But on a new site (HiBid) normally I normally use invaluable but the problem with hibid is that you cannot cancel your bid and I did not know that.
So I don't want to take it but I'm the high bidder in fact I'm the only bidder.
I've asked to cancel the bid but I haven't heard back from the seller yet but I will keep following up. If they don't allow me to see the back I think that would be a reason to get out.
I'm not in it for a huge amount of money about 120usd for the lady only which was the lowest bid possible bid but I don't want to proceed if it's not 19th century.

Edit actually I've been outbid now. So that solve that problem however I am interested in what people think about whether this is genuinely 19th century. It looks like the sort of thing that there should be plenty of given that it has the kind of plaque and everything and they seem to be a series

Yeah I did a bit of Google work but based on the fact that it kind of had that plaque and the fact that there were two of them but the same frame I assume that it was a reproduction. I'm ok with reproductions if they are old like I like some of those old victorian spelter pieces where they have the artist signature but it's clearly not the original which would have been in bronze and they were made from about the 1880s to the 1920's or something like that and I'm wondering if these particular paintings are a similar sort of thing.

Yes,many of the reproductions made in the Victorian era are superior to those we make today. Here's a repro in The British Museum of a helmet made thru the process of Electrotyping,an electrical molding method invented in 1830's.Original from the Royal Cemetery of UR. helmet.jpg

Agree with Bosco69 could be another F Mora artist. The picture of the violin players dress looks very Alpine /European style ,not American or South American of that time. They could still be 19 ct but not by "Francis Luis Mora"

I took a look at Francis Luis Mora too and doesn't appear to be his work... or signature.

Yeah agreed I saw Luis and it's not the same work or signature. Unless these were extremely early pieces....but the signature is too far off. Definitely a different artist.

The plaques with artist name were a common thing to add to your fancy paintings. It doesn't mean they are reproductions, just a series framed at the same time. The second piece does have a crack texture but it's one of those things where I wish I could hold it in person to tell!

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

Agreed with the above comments. Not the same Mora, can't tell if they are actual paintings or not. And I don't think they are meant to go together. So, either paintings framed at the same time, or possibly prints. Too bad we can't see the backs! Seems that you were lucky to be outbid, @Gatoblanconz .

Agree not a pair. But wouldn't be surprised if each was missing one.
