As a lot of you know, I know very little about silver marks, so please bear with me. :shy:
I have a set of six knives and six forks. My best guess is Luen Hing based purely on the LH. Does the 90 mean sterling? What about a date? Thanks for any help or advice.

90 is .900 silver fineness, which is the usual fineness for this quality Chinese export ware. Sterling is .925.
The LH could be Luen Hing, but the Chinese characters are different from what I've seen on Luen Hing silver. Have you checked chinese-export-silver.com?

Don't put it in the title, some people won't even look when it is not sterling.
Chinese export silver is rarely sterling, of course, and .900 is a perfectly good fineness.
Do put the 90 mark in the description, and add that it is the usual fineness for quality export silver. Once the 'sterling hunters' have seen them, they could be interested, and maybe learn more about that wonderful Chinese Export Silver.
1890-1900 would be my guess, but we'd have to know more about Luen Hing to be sure.

Luen Hing was a Shanghai retail silversmith, depending on source, working dates of circa 1880-1920 or 1875-1930, the chop-mark at right probably belonged to the actual silversmith. I can check another of my references in a day or two, but don't know that there would be any more info.

Chinese Export Silver varies in fineness, with percentage marks anywhere from '85' to '99' - '90' is the most common, likely due to .900 being the approximate fineness of the Spanish reales and Asian 'trade dollars' of the era. A British auction house would likely tend toward caution on white metal pieces without proper hallmarks...
