It's a gorgeous box. Can't help with the champleve other than to say "maybe". How big is this? Really a handsome piece. Wait for others...

Might be niello. I'd say it's a champleve technique, but the fill might not be enamel. From Wikipedia: Niello is a black mixture of copper, silver, and lead sulphides.

The crackles look more like modern enamel paint than true enamel

Doubt that it is niello, the piece could be 2000 years old and would not crackle like the box material.

It's an old cedar-lined cigarette box, from before the days of filters. It looks like some sort of poured enamel, but champleve is made of what's essentially glass. It wouldn't break up like that.

Thanks folks! So not Champleve, what would this technique be called?
Terry, you think this is enamel paint?

It is champlevé, which means raised field. The 'fields', floral designs, are raised, probably cast that way. The enamel is probably made with natural resin, which tends to crack when exposed to temperature changes, etc. It is not niello, that doesn't crack.
I'd say it is from India or Indonesia. Are you going to sell it?
