Is this an unusual flexible curve rule?

This flexible curve rule seems to be made out of steel - a flexible rod, coils, and a thin flat steel piece. It's 20" long. Have you seen one like this before? There is no name on it.

Thanks Af. I know what it is, I just haven't seen another one constructed in this way.

Nope, the nearest I have come to it is a wooden spline for marking out boat parts on a lofting floor from by boatyard days.

Which is how I happened to know what they are called.

    Hi,
Some architects I know have your spline but if using CAD most do not do hand drawing anymore.

I would think those coils would make for a bumpy line - could it be an internal bending spring for pipe bending?

There is a thin strip of flat metal attached to one side.
