Is this ambrotype?

I'm trying to figure out what this is. It looks like more of a print than a photograph. The backing looks like gold paint. It is a 3x5 piece of glass.

Hopefully someone else can tell you the type of print and why it's reversed.

All I can say is sepia toned.

 

It's a copy of a well known print.

are there tiny claws that hold a "print" tightly to the glass?

 

just noticed..no claws just a tiny bit of backing or glass missing from lower l corner on reverse view...if it is just backing and not glass ..I think a print tightly adhered to glass

 

A few months ago I had found some information about prints on glass -- and I don't remember what they were called. I posted to a thread somewhere on this site. If I can find it I'll link to that here. It was definitely a "thing." Some of the early ones were quite the works of art, but as time went on they were not as well made.

I don't think yours is an ambrotype, but I can't really tell for sure. Can you tell if the backing includes the print? Or is the print itself printed onto the glass? You may not be able to tell, and that's okay.
