Is this a real balangandan and is this a silver mark?

  1. I bought this at a brocante, a bit cheeky as I recognized what it was, but they didn't know. What I don't know is if it has real age and if it is silver. Is this a known mark for Brazil? It is large- not a brooch. PXL_20220906_082651668.jpg PXL_20220906_082706495.jpg

The wooden bit looks like a figa, aka an Italian charm made to ward off the "evil eye". No idea about the rest, except the hand looks old.

Penca de balangandan are fairly common in silverplate and still have good value - not a mark I've seen on Brazilian silver, and to my eye looks plated, but you might have it tested...

For those unfamiliar with these fascinating items (I know a collector), here is a short but informative blog post:

It was used in other parts of Continental Europe as well, including Portugal, which could be the link in this case.

The mano figa is a very common lucky charm in Brazil, no doubt brought there by the Portuguese long ago...
