Is this a real antique painting on board or some kind of really good fake?

the frame looks newish from the front and very old aged flood from the back.
The painting looks and feel almost smooth but at some spots you can see raised paint very tinny bit. It’s painted on board. But the board itself doesn’t looks very old

Let's start with... Where did you get it? And what were you told about it?

I think there's a date on it. looks like 1846.

I'll bet @Aquitaine can bring that up much better.

Trying to judge from photos, I have the impression I am seeing pictures of brush strokes, not actual texture, but it's hard to tell from a pic on a monitor.

The signature looks like it would be relatively legible if seen straight on. At an angle, all I think I see is T. G___

What do you see? Have you researched the name?

    Princess Leia, the early years?

I will give it a try to take better photo tonight. For some reason I just don’t think this is actually that old . But then why would anyone make a good fake unknown painting.

I have this painting from 1854:

In terms of fashion, they're not all of that different. Yours could be wearing widow's weeds, or it could be that type of portrait that stresses humility/chastity/gentleness.

I covet her jewellery. That chain around her neck is lovely.

Looks like 1846 behind artist's name. That would be appropriate for her costume. She's very bourgeois to my eye -- the curls, the lace, her best jewels. A regional painter I would think. And Continental (but, of course, I could be wrong.)

I think signature reads J Gorbitz 1846. Maybe Johan Gorbitz ,Norwegian artist 1782 - 1853.He painted a lot of potraits.Could not find a signature to make a comparison.Maybe someone else might find a signature to compare.

Please, please, please tell us anything you know about it:
    - where did you get it
    - where are you (this is a global board)
    - anything you know about it (what did the seller tell you when you bought it, any family history)
    - complete set of measurements

We need this information to help you.

I like this portrait very much, but I don't know how old it could be.
The board looks so bright on the back, doesn't look antique, but perhaps it is just a backing board? Have you taken the frame off of it yet? From the front view, the frame looks quite new, but looks older from the back.

Yeah right? The front frame looks new with some kind of paint over but the back is mad old pass the scratch test. I am not sure if it’s the back board, it feels like the actual board painted on. Kinda afraid of damaging it so I didn’t take off the frame. I got it from long island NY thrift shop

maybe it’s glued onto the new backing board. The holding nails looks new too
