Hello everyone - I'm trying to puzzle this one out and any help would be appreciated. It stands 5" tall, 3 5/8" across the top and only 1 1/4" across the base. Thanks for whatever help you can provide.

Most car vases had a "flat side" because of where they hung. This looks like it is intended for a metal frame as a vase. At least to me.

I agree with George, the shape is not correct for a car vase.

It might also be the base for a two part tazza shape missing its top. I've seen them made like that.

I'm looking while on my phone now, and that's difficult at best, but I've yet to see one with a flat side on that site I offered.

    Hi,
I had an Austrian lamp that had a center space for a vase to hold fresh flowers. I had one with a crystal vase like the one pictured and one with a canary or vaseline vase. They were made in the WWl era with hanging crystals and painted centers and bases that had lights in them.

My ol' man says it looks a lot like the vases in his old 1947 Buick Roadster, which sadly has gone to its rest, so no current inspection possible.

    Hi,
The rim is too wide for a car vase. They are usually flat on one side to fit better in the auto.

    It's not a car vase.
99% of (glass) car vases will have some embossed feature, a dimple or raised band to accommodate the metal mounting bracket securely so the vase wont jump out hitting bumps and such. Most ,but not all have inward rolled lips to stop water from sloshing out. The flare of OPs is way to wide for a car vase. Space WAS limited and a pair of those would be very intrusive in an early auto interior.

There's at least a couple of epergne fonts in the photo above;).

I've had several car vases, with and without the mounting brackets, over the years. Mostly singles though. No pairs.

My ol' man says... in his time, they were not flat-sided, no need as they were set out a bit so the flower could stand straight. Spillage was no worry cuz they only had an inch of water or so to sustain the flower. The shapes made them fit the holders, no need for rings or whatever. I have no idea, of course, but my ol' man has had lots of cars from the 30s to 50s and he seems pretty convinced. I promised him I would post this, and if it makes somebody mad at me, I won't speak to him for a week, I swear.

Heavens! I feel I must step in before blows are exchanged! ;) And I certainly don't want to be the cause of strife in anyone's relationship! I have found a site called carvase.com - I'm assuming it's still active. I'll send them a query and let you know if they respond. They say they have 1400 car vases in their collection so if this puppy is a car vase I would think they would have come across it or something very similar. Thanks for all your responses!

I had this silver holder that I can't find right now or I would post a photo. Imagine it fitting perfectly on the bottom of this vase, the vase would slide down inside it. It looked like a very tall straight sided toothpick holder with a wide base. I think this is a vase that one time had a silver base that it went into. If the base was sterling, then we know what happened to it. OH NO, Mr. Bill! Don't melt me!!

Anyway, that's what I think it is.
