This was listed as “Nippon School, Unusual Pattern “ at a local auction and was curious what you thought about it. I can't resist anything odd and this fits the bill. Think I can see why they thought it was Japanese but the pattern may upset that idea. At 31cm high with a diameter of 16cm and weight of 1.9Kg it is quite a thick robust vase and seems to have some age to it. As far as I can tell those patterns are applied to the outside and fired on. No makers marks anywhere. Any ideas to origin and possibly era? Cheers Stephen
I have one with the exact same form(same shape, same black ceramic, same texture on the background) but different decoration - mine has tree branches and birds, and mine is stamped "made in japan" in the ceramic on the bottom. I don't know any more about it though
Here's a pair that are fairly similar to mine(and yours - given the difference in decoration): https://www.chairish.com/product/45...d-vases-pair?gclid=COLptsTUr9QCFRJYDQodDGQAZQ
It's called Tokanabe pottery. I wasn't able to find any reference to it on Gothborg. I did find images https://www.google.com/search?tbm=i...3k1j0i7i30k1j0i8i7i30k1.0.vNbwFyxa1ys#imgrc=_ Also a wiki page, but not much info and I'm not sure how accurate it is. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tokanabe
Now that is interesting. It seems the auction house wasn't stupid after all. To be fair they do get most things right. I'll have to add "Tokanabe" to my mental antiques dictionary. Thanks for the help gang. Cheers Stephen
I was wondering about that also, but a lot of made up terms pass me by... like "Eames era" and "Harvey Era", I think are made up as keywords for eBay.
