Welcome Top Antiques - It's really not my area but I would have trampled over my own mother to get to it first (and she's tough). Really an impressive little box!

I hate to say this, but I think yours is a good copy. It looks too sharp and crisp and new to me.

Ownedbybear is usually spot on but it couldn't hurt to run it past Christies and see what they say.

Oh, agreed. They're usually helpful, and it can't hurt at all.

I agree with Bear. The Christie's version has significant differences, both in design elements and execution. It looks handmade and handpainted, while yours has a new, production line look to it.

It seems 2 of these were sold by Christie. According to the "Lot Notes" on the 2 they sold, other boxes were made with differences between them all:

"The design on the cover and the base of this box closely resembles a Spanish-American 8-real silver coin which is inscribed on the portrait side CAROLUS IIII DEI GRATIA 1808 and on the other side HISPAN ET IND REX ME 8R JP. .... The portrait on the present box is closer to that of Charles IV, although the Chinese artist has omitted the fourth 'I' in the inscription and the last number of the date is unclear. The inscriptions on these porcelain boxes ........carved with the Carolus dollar, are frequently inaccurate and there are discrepancies from one box to another, suggesting that the Chinese artist may have copied another box rather than a coin."

    Do contact Christie's!!!

Interesting, the second one from Christie's looks more like Top Antiques' box, though still a bit less perfect-looking.

Pay attention to the colors. The C's are not that strong, more pale and not that opaque. The painting style is more free.

Yes, very interesting item that on the surface seems to be too good to be true. After seeing the Christies' examples, there seems to at least to be the possibility that it is legitimate. I will be very interested to know what they say.
