Seems much too late for the Civil War. I would think military school.

I see no connection to the Church, but...................

I dont understand the church connection myself.

The lack of buttons on the overcoat is what has me questioning, but maybe the artist just left it out?

What makes you think its too late?

What do y'all think about his pinky ring?

I see buttons on the coat, just not on the cape/collar - where I wouldn't expect them anyway. It is a tinted photo, correct?

Certainly looks like a tinted photograph.

To get your bearings you're seeing the reflection of a white bedspread with a design and a pair of knees in ripped jeans hanging over the side

Yeah - Figtree has mentioned the name for that process about ten-gazillion times..............and I still can't keep it locked in my brain................

Do these charcoal copies hold any value among collectors?

Dunno but I think what appears to be generic image of military school cadet wouldn't generate a lot of interest. Have you taken back off to see if young man/circumstances identified?

It's called a "crayon enlargement". The process was introduced in the 1850s and made with a solar enlarger.

No, it's up for sale at an estate sale were starting tomorrow so we haven't opened up the back.
I'm tempted to buy it but am weary of the resale value.

Even good subject matter like someone famous, an obvious soldier in appropriate attire or a Native American can be bought for less than $100.
I'm sure there are some that bring good money, I just haven't seen it.

    Yeah, Im a little iffy.
Theres another crayon enlargement there of a identified man from over in England.
Hes very handsome and his eyes are to die for! Its about a quarter of this size, my boss marked it at $36, Id give him $20 but he wont take that on the first day..
If someone buys it I will probably be kicking myself for many years. :hungover:
