  1. Hi

My name is Martyn and I live in the UK. I have a huge interest in history and a house full of social and military history. I have previously worked in a museum and am interested in anything with history from mediaeval coins to Victorian sewing machines. I enjoy learning about historic items and studying them. I'm a massive bargain hunter

It is always nice to start young, you build a good foundation of knowledge and you become more discerning when it comes to recognizing the genuine thing.

  7. You are right there. I still struggle with some items.... especially candlesticks which I tend to pick up cheaply now and again.

    Hi Martyn!

    Welcome to Antiquers............:cat:

  9. Thanks Judy. It looks an interesting site. I really love bargain hunting and a local charity shop has some really nice things. Two days ago I bought for four pound each two 18th century map prints of my local county. One 1766 and the other 1789. Both later hand coloured and framed. You don't have to spend a lot if you know what you are looking at which sometimes I do. I do still buy junk now and again though.

I find history fascinating and being able to touch something that was used in the past brings it to life

  13. Hi. Yes sewing machines. The oldest I have is a really good condition singer 12K. 1874. Bought it for ten pounds in a junk shop. I like the way that they are built very similar to contemporary steam engine technology and colouring. I pick then up when they're cheap. I also have a Jones serpentine 1885 and a white peerless 1884. Others are mainly singers and Frister & Rossmann 1880s and 1890s. I will look at that link.
