Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

Some of you will remember the antique photos (large size) that one of the eBay boardies (eclectic) was going to send. I did receive them, and have made scans that may make some of the details more visible.

Although I posted them on the AB I thought I'd do it here, too -- some of you are not going there any more and expressed an interest.

While they are not exact "copies" of them, these photos evoke the sitting room, guest room and morning room of my Grandmother's townhouse in NY when I was growing up. And yes, she did drape the transoms over some doors. In the sitting room and drawing room the furniture arrangement was fluid - seating was moved where it was to be used at that moment, not rigidly set.

Note the way the door opens in the lowest photo - with the view of the room blocked while opening the door. Today it would be hung so that it opened against the wall. Difficult to tell about the draped door in the top photo.

I don't know if you have noticed, Fig, but the three chandeliers in the three different rooms all have the same teardrop (?) shades and quite similar arms. Did eclectic think these were all from the same home?

Good catch - and on closer inspection, the bedroom and "dining room" fixtures seem to be identical. That little cupid would creep my out after a bit...............

Hi, and thanks for the comments!

Here are closeups of the chandeliers from the dining room and bedroom.

Is that a doll hanging from the bottom of the bedroom fixture? Love that touch of whimsy in all that stuffiness...................

It looks like it might be an angel... the flat thing on top of the head may be a halo, and the lumps on the back may be wings.

Sure it is not a doll in a kimono?

Great pics. Reminds me very much of my grandmother's house as well.

Are those linoleum rugs cut in geometric patterns in the first pic? ..... or maybe just linoleum runners? My grandmother's house had linoleum rugs everywhere on the second floor over the wood floors. The Victorian house I used to own had them as well. How and why did this addition to homes come about? 30s? Ease of cleaning?

I also noticed that the pattern on the rug in the dining room is the same as in the bedroom.

It could be a doll in a kimono... anything is possible!

I'm not familiar with linoleum rugs, or linoleum runners. Were these made of linoleum?

I'll see if I can look at the floor with a magnifier.

I do think these all go together. The cards they are on are all the same, and they are all the same size -- 8" x 10", larger than most. Also, Eclectic found them all together in the same shop.

Got me thinking and I found this site about linoleum rugs.......

This is so interesting -- thinking back, I have probably seen these before but never realized what they were.

As for the photos I posted, yesterday I did look under magnification and thought I could see weaving in some places. But after reading that article I realize that that could have been printed on... so I don't know how to tell the difference based on the photos I have.

I bet a closer look at all that stuff against the left wall in that first shot would be fun. All those packed shelves overflowing with cool Victoriana could keep us busy ohhhing ahhhhing and IDing for hours.
