Interesting watercolor. Is there a name for this style ?

Hello ! I couldn't resist this water color in the thrift store today. Something about it spoke the New Englander in me. Is there a particular name for this type of painting with the paint wash, little squiggles and pencil or ink details ?
I love the cows and pigs !

Can see why it'd catch your eye. But are you sure it's a water color?

Debora, I think it is but I am certainly no expert. I don't believe it's a print, there is paint evident on the back through handling and looking closely you can see the applied medium along with some smudges.

I only ask because it looks as if it would be difficult to execute in water color.

It made me think of those pictures we did in school where you colored your picture, covered it in india ink and them scraped the india ink off. That process has a name, but darn if I can remember it.

The colored sections look like that found on a hand-tinted etching or map.

Looks like a block print to me.

    That's what I was thinking too - maybe a hand-colored linocut?

Wow, thanks for all the help ! I'll research all the suggestions and see what seems the most likely. I'll be keeping it anyway, just like to learn and be accurate if asked about it.
    Thanks again !

What does the back look like? Any possibility of an artist's signature under frame?

Aquitaine, I love big old red barns and covered bridges !

Debora, the back just plain with smudges and no signature I can see. Some of the lines look like they want to be a signature but I think they are just part of the design. Looks trimmed on the edges. barn3.jpg barn4.jpg barn5.jpg

It looks like someone took a black and white line drawing and blotted color on to make it look 'antiqued' or 'shabby chic.' (Did you know the phrase 'shabby chic' was trademarked by a company called Rachel Ashwell?)
