I wasn't sure what category to place this little covered vessel/basket. In the sunlight, there is almost a metallic quality to it. Any thoughts on where it was made? Approx. height 5 inches, overall diameter 6 inches. IMG_4183.jpg IMG_4188.jpg IMG_4187.jpg IMG_4189.jpg IMG_4190.JPG IMG_4191.JPG IMG_4192.jpg

Love your basket, Laura. It was probably made on Lombok, Indonesia.
If your basket was made by a Sasak, one of the original people of Lombok, it would be considered tribal in the West. If it was made by one of the Lombok Balinese, it is not tribal. As far as I know, these baskets are made by the Sasak.

'Tribal' is a Western term btw. There is no equivalent in Indonesian, because that way of categorizing never used to be part of their way of thinking. More recently they have started to use the English term to accomodate to Westerners.

No, tell it to those Japanese and Westerners who prey on the vulnerable.

    ...
And it certainly is predatory behavior...We, as a species, prey on ourselves...we eat our young, in many ways. We aren't sufficiently evolved to be trusted to do what's right...for each other, and for our home, this planet. Can doom be far ahead? I'm glad that I am old.

    Here's a line from a book I'm reading...
"The great and terrible thing about humankind is simply this: we will always do what we are capable of."

Thank you so much. I am so shocked by how little they sell for. This piece looks like it would have been painstaking and time consuming! I might have to keep it and put tea bags in it.

Yes, and made with such perfection and a feeling for the esthetic too.
Perfect. On Lombok they are used as storage baskets for food etc.

@Any Jewelry - do you know what the coloration is? Is it the material used, or dye, or something else?

As far as I know the dark part is dyed before weaving.

Maybe @Taupou can tell us for sure.:)
