Featured Interesting Silver Box with Serpent

A little box measuring a bit over 2" long, 1 1/2" wide, and 1 1/2" high to the top of the "antennae" or whatever they're supposed to be. There are no marks on the box that I can find. It's very lightweight - .06 oz or 17 grams, so I'm not sure whether it's sterling or something like german silver.

Could this be a snuff box?

Any thoughts on the age, origin, etc?

From the legs I tend to think it is a type of deer perhaps.

Edit: It seems to be lying curled up in a bed of flowers with it's legs visible on one side with hoofs showing. What looks serpent like is a representation of it's spine I think.

 

Roe deer from Germany have small strange horns....

 

Wouldn't surprise me to be from India or South America. But without any marks at all, determining composition will require a test. Seems too thin to be plated.

What I am most curious about is the 2 little flanges above the antennae.

 

I think they are ears.

 

It looks like those are meant to hold something.
I get an Asian vibe from the box, could be India as you suggested, Bakers. Could be further east, like Thailand. Maybe a lime box, part of the betel leaves paraphernalia.

 

They don't look like ears to me. Maybe we need a better look at them more directly.

That does look like a pick or something under that curlicue thing.

Here are a couple more photos that show more top detail. I think the little triangle pieces are supposed to be ears. There are 2 curlicue antennae/horns, and each has a double scroll. There's a snake on the lower top.

 

It is a very intetesting design! Almost dragon-like too. Or like a salamander/oxylotyl.

 

Looks like a Cambodian/Khmer deer betel box, though there are better made versions - might be silver of some grade, or might be another metal...

A bit small for a betel box, I thought a lime box for betel use. I agree on that part of Asia, Cambodia, Thailand, Laos.
