    Hello,

I bought an interesting antique rolltop desk on Craigslist and I have no idea what I've got and there don't appear to be any identifying marks on it. I've been searching Google trying to figure out what this is and when it is from, but I'm not getting far. The previous owner said that his mom bought it about 60 years ago, but I suspect it is older than that.

I'd say the most interesting thing about this piece is the way the drawers unlock. There are no keys. There is a wood piece under each of the drawer sides that when pushed up with your foot, unlocks the drawers on that side. To unlock the middle drawer, you have to use both feet to push the levers on both sides. Very James Bondish. Has anyone ever seen anything like this?

I've also provided photos if it helps. Sorry about all the crap on it. Note that I haven't installed the rolltop cover yet. Also note the "cutting boards" that you can pull out on each side.

    Hi,
With those handles and styles I would guess 1900/1910. I would guess a nice secretary desk. Would be a deterrent unless sitting at the desk. No one would be able to open the top or the drawers by standing near the desk. Make sense for a payday desk also. Good sturdy piece and should last for years. Not like new pieces that breakdown after a few months of heavy work.

This is what is commonly referred to as a "C" roll-top desk since the curve in the roll-top is a simple curve as opposed to the sinuous curve found on many. I think the 1900-1910 date is right but could have been made for a few decades the same way. Have not seen this type of locking mechanism and think it is probably a patent variation. The pull-out boards are called scribe boards.

Thanks for the information!! I also suspected the date range you both said. Assuming it is in good condition (it is), did I get a good deal at $200?
    Thanks again!

    Hi,
Try and buy a desk at Ikea for 200, you get garbage.
