I like this jug just for the reason that someone liked or needed it enough to repair it.
Can anyone tell me when this type of repair was common please? I’d wonder how successful it was as they had to drill through the body of the jug to secure the new handle!
Looks to be roughly hand painted with some lustre on the spout.
    Around 6” tall.
    Thanks for looking :)

Quirky little pitcher! Is the spout painted to resemble a bird's beak? Or a bird?
It does appear to have originally been made this way, rather than a metal "repair".
What is in the interior, please? Is the interior glazed a white color?

People valued things more, in many ways. Buying new was more expensive than getting a local blacksmith or handyman to mend. That may well have been done by the man of the house.

Growing up, we had a kitchen paring knife which had lost its wooden handle ages since. The sailor grandfather I never knew had whip bound it a new one, with string. Nicest thing to hold and my parents treasured it.

How old do you think this is OBB? Most with this repair seem to be late 19th C, would that fit?
Yes, uneven white glaze that is thin in places.

I'd think so. The jug itself is 1870s ish to 90s. I've a vague idea that the bits for doing repairs like this were sold as sort of kits.

I’m in awe of these repairs. There must be considerable skill needed to patch these back together.

The staple ones are really skilled, especially on glass. I love them.

Having looked at lots of photos I think you are correct (no surprise there!). There are too many very similar repairs.

Probably most of the repaired bog standard pieces are now of higher value than the pristine ones!
I also admire the tenacity to find every last shard. The last plate OH broke on our tiled floor shattered into a million pieces that I’m still finding weeks later.

This might be one, there’s no text with it though.

That looks right for staples. It's the banded and handle replacement ones I think may have been kits.
