I found this st a local thrift store this morning. I believe this is cloisonne? It is made of some kind of metal & it is heavy.
At first I thought it was very old & I'd struck a home run, but then I found 'Made in Japan' stamped in the bottom. When did they start doing that?
    Is it cloisonne?
Does it have any value? I paid $29.95, which is a lot for me at a thrift store, but the weight and the detail made me take a chance.
It also needs to be cleaned - how do I do that safely?
    I appreciate any help!

Well the coloured bits are definitely cloisonne. I would guess 20th century, but others will know for sure. I would have bought it for that money.

Don’t try cleaning it, my humble advice anyway, anyone really interested in buying won’t care if a bit patinated, but may well reject it if traces of cleaner get in crevices. If you are keeping it, clean it however you want, no matter.

    Champleve rather than cloisonne...

Yes, Cheryl is correct, I just looked up how to tell the difference. It says that the enamel is in areas from the main metal body in champleve and cloisonne is in soldered on wire compartments for the enamel.
