I bought this box recently, I think it has some real age maybe 1750? I suspect it's Indo-Portuguese. There is evidence to show the lock (Victorian) has been changed at a later date. The wood is some sort of hardwood (maybe rosewood) with deep inset ivory, 2 of the feet are replacements (one by me, the ebony one) but the other 2 are original made from buffalo horn. It would be wonderful if you great people could give me your opinion. I did find a box of similar type halfway down this page in a group of Indo-Portuguese boxes, it's the one on the top right of the group .......... https://www.liveauctioneers.com/new...ature-indo-portuguese-contadors-boxes-feb-27/
I agree it has some age but I would guess it's late 18th early 19th (around 1800); thanks for posting, great box!
Gorgeous as always, raver. If I may be so bold to abuse your Asian thread for some lobbying for an Asian antiques forum: https://www.antiquers.com/threads/asian-antiques-forum-please.22293/#post-300264 Everyone please support us.
Ok nothing to do with Indo-Portuguese or 1750.....It's 1850-1880 and it's called a Monghyr box....clearly, I did not know that lol .........http://collections.vam.ac.uk/search...ch=&materialsearch=&mnsearch=&locationsearch=
Well.... Indo, but not Portuguese. Still antique, and still beautiful. Monghyr (Munger) is in Bihar, never Portuguese occupied. They were in neighbouring Bengal though, in the 16th century.
Yes I knew it must be from India but because I hadn't seen one before so I assumed it must be early, just so happens they are rather rarer than the ordinary fare I see on a daily basis
