    Could we see the base as well?
    They are for a handle. The ends of the handle fit in the holes.
    India or Sri Lanka.

    If the top screws on , a stick could be placed between the knobs and used for leverage to turn the lid off. Google lens the characters and you will get your answer most likely. I have seen the characters before but can not put a country to them.

    They weren't used to fit a stick though, there would have been a proper cast brass handle, bow shaped or C-shaped.
