Hi! Found this great oil on canvas painting at my local thrift ($5!).
    Measures 25 1/2" by 20 1/2" wide.

The elderly painter looks like a woman in glasses to me.

It's not signed, but it appears that the canvas was cut and remounted to fit in the frame.

I was looking at some paintings by Anne Carlton

and I see a lot of similarities. She was known to leave out facial features....see wanted the viewer to look at whole scene, not just the people.

She painted in Massachusetts and Maine.

If it's not signed, what's that in the lower left?

    I think the 2nd pic is OP's, Bob, and I don't see a sig.

To be honest, although both paintings are impressionistic, the painting styles look very different to me.

Your painting is nice, and a good deal for $5! I'm thinking it would look even better in a lighter-colored frame... to my eye the current one is kind of overpowering the delicate colors in the painting.

    Aha!

That's a shame. I like the first one. I don't think the second one comes even close. Definitely not the same painter.

Good morning! Thank you for your help and replies! Oops...her last name is spelled Carleton....doh! Anne Carleton.

The frame on my painting looks 1960's....so she would have been in her 80's if she was the painter. The painting by her I posted was done between 1915-1925. I figured that the technique may have softened a bit due to time and her age.

The colors aren't as bright as my photos...I have a hate/hate relationship with my camera, but buying a new one isn't in the cards right now...lol

Here is another one of her paintings circa 1915-1925. Note the faces.

    I don't think it's Carleton. I also think it's a man, not a woman.

Two different artists, for sure. Definitely not Carleton.
