Found this plate at the bottom of a box lot of unwanted porcelain items at a local auction. It was a daunting task, but I had to bid all the up to $3 to get it. I know, I know... rough life ;)

Anyway, the back is embossed "MINTONS" with another mark I can't read. The front features a crown with the initials "VR" or "RV" in the center.

Ya think this could have been used at some stately castle by a king/queen and their court?

Now that's a pretty plate! I don't know who might have owned it, but I think it's noteworthy that the florals are shamrocks, Thistle and roses. Makes me think of Ireland, Scotland and something else. Might be a hint.

BTW, The title should read "dinner" not diner. I was not expecting something totally inappropriate for the "blue plate special" in a "greasy spoon." ;)

Same design all right. Her Majesty was known for giving away oddments of clothing etc once she'd used them, in the interests of promoting British industry etc. (she knew they'd be souvenirs) Maybe the same was done with the plates? Or a guest swiped one.(LOL)
