I think it is some type of serving platter. the center is raised.
It is 14" diameter including the handles.
I looked through the G site a couple times. Maybe i missed it?
Hope someone can tell me the mark. the plate seems very old.
I posted two pics of the mark as i am not sure the orientation

It is a Japanese Satsuma ware mark. 2nd pic is correct orientation. The bottom character is "zan" or "san" but I'm not finding this specific mark on any of the id sites.

Agree, the top character is very scrawled and I can't make it out. Date is early 20th century, quite possibly a tureen stand.

A very nice Japanese man on Facebook told me the piece is porcelain so it is not Satsuma. The mark is of Miyanaga Tozan
    First generation Tozan 1868-1941.

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

Did he know what its function is? I like the idea of tureen stand.

Something like a tureen I'm sure. I keep checking back at that store, maybe the other piece will show up.

If you didn't see it, look at the repeat schedule to watch this week's season premiere of Antiques Roadshow. There is a wonderful lot of Japanese ceramics to learn from.
