    Hi all!
I believed this mexican bracelet to have onyx stones but I notice from one angle the stones seem to have gold-ish speckles and I'm not sure if that's indicative of it being something else. I know you can never know for sure from pictures, but if anyone has some tricks for how to tell or any guesses, I'd love to know!
edit- my image inserts aren't working so I'll just post the link!

Do all of them have those glittery specks? Are they distributed all though? Inside, not at the surface? I can't think of any natural stone that would look like this, which doesn't mean that there is no such thing. It reminds me more of 'goldstone', which is really glass with copper flakes.

Have not known of a black version, but, again, my not knowing doesn't mean much.

With the "glitter" in it could be Midnight Goldstone. Found this on ETSY......

The flakes are more gold with no blue hues but maybe there are different colour variations?
    what a pretty stone though!!!
All the stones have it, but it is not visible from the top surface, only on the vertical edge (shown in the second picture) and yes the sparkles appear to be distributed within and not on the surface. It does look something like this goldstone but of course the glitters are not nearly so prominant and not the same colour as what I've google imaged so far, but like you say, that's not to say there's not such a thing!

ah yes, the colours look a lot like the gold sheen obsidian!
like in these earrings for example where one part is quite black and another has got the same coloured speckles! I finally did get a better camera but got it second-hand with no usb cable, so once I get that I can try a better photo! (My phone is really bad for close-ups!!)

This Mexican bracelet on etsy is listed as being obsidian- Though the speckles are much more prominant in these, the ones in my stones are along the same lines. I'm thinking Hollyblue is likely right about it being obsidian!

May I suggest a Magnifier app for your phone. I have Magnifying Glass Pro and it takes pictures.

Obsidian like moonstone, opal and number of other stones need to be orientated right when they are cut.Otherwise the colors tend to off to one side and don't cover the top surface.

Camera +2 App works well on my iPhone.
Not as good as a proper camera but sometimes I take an iPhone pic through a loupe too for something small like a hallmark. I do borrow daughters hands though to press the button whilst juggling it all!.
iPhones have a built in magnifier if you press the home button quickly three times although I find that less helpful as sometimes the image moves when you press the button.

interesting, I didn't know that! well if mine are obsidian than that would explain the colours not being visible form top!
