I picked these up today. They were marked as Native American, and my feeling is they are old, but other than that, I just don’t know enough to identify them positively. There are a couple dings and chips that seem to show light colored flecks in the clay, so I think they are shell tempered pottery.

Bowl- approx 10” in diameter, 3-3/4” tall. It feels fairly light for its size. It is decorated with random stipples and inscribed lines.

Pot- about 5-1/2” in diameter and just under 6” high. The walls are noticeably thicker than the bowl, with a reddish applied design. IMG_5179.jpeg

    Any help is greatly appreciated.

The bowl's color and clay look like an ancient style. But the shape, patina, and wear on the bottom do not look actually ancient (to me). Perhaps it's a modern 'homage' to an ancient pottery tradition.

The pot looks Central American and strikes me similarly: it wants to be old but it does not have the evidence of wear I would expect on something centuries old.

Ditto-Ancient potters had the skills and techniques to craft items every bit as polished as more modern throwers. When you look at a so-called great 'primitive' piece-the stippling, shaping and balance when made by a masterful artist is as sublimely done as a modern virtuoso.
Cruder could mean it was executed by someone who admired old pieces and was trying to learn how they were done.
Check these pieces (which from a quick read,i think actually are old/ancient).
PS-I'm no pottery expert, just a fan of all types of art.

Sorry, I can't say anything for certain. The designs on the bowl look similar to Mississippian pieces but, like Potteryplease, I get the feeling they are not quite right.

Thank you for your input everyone. I had wondered if the roughness, especially on the bowl was intentional.

I picked up a couple of Santo Domingo (mid twentieth century) pieces from the same estate. The rest of the collection which I passed on was relatively modern southwestern signed pieces.

I’ll keep digging on these, but consider them experimental archaeology for now.

One of my concerns is that I believe fakes have been and are being made of Mississippian pottery.
