A couple of other pottery groups have been stumped by this one, but maybe you guys can ID the maker on this piece. Here's what I do know--it was made in a mold, a yellowish stoneware, the mark is raised but there is so much glaze over it that a rubbing does not work; the mark looks like it might contain B Y TH? But is is not Beyreuth. It is heavy like American Art Pottery but the design and glaze look more European. And I found it at a tag sale in rural CT. Of, and it is about 8.5" tall. green bottom.jpg green mark.jpg green pot.jpg

    I like it, too.

Could the mark be something like "BLOOM" OR "BLOSSOM"? Or maybe it starts with "Bu"?

I believe this is the mark for RumRill pottery. Love the design!

But RumRill started in 1933 according to Kovel's. This vase is quite a bit older, like circa 1900. Unless there is older RumRill because the mark is very similar but there is no number and most of their pieces had mold numbers.

Hmm, I said Rumrill might be right because the letters looked close, but I can't find anything made by Rumrill that looks like this.

RumRill seemed the closest to the image of the mark on your vase, so I mentioned that as a possible area to research. But, you are correct that RumRill was produced in the 1930s. I know your pot has an art nouveau design, but thought it might have been produced later. I glanced through the book by Warman entitled Red Wing Pottery , a company who produced wares for RumRill. There is a section in the book devoted to RumRill, but I did not see any glazes in that unusual green color in the examples shown. I guess it remains a mystery.

Do we think it could be early Brush? Before the Brush factory burned down in 1907 and he joined McCoy?

Brush seems unlikely. Most Brush and/or McCoy pieces from that era were unmarked. Sometimes you see a mold number but that's usually about it. Later Brush was marked but usually in some type of script.

It's a very nice mold but the color seems wrong for that style. Is there any chance it's Bauer? I'm not that familiar with Bauer's production but they did some marks in block letters centered on the bottom.

    I was thinking pre-McCoy Brush.

Not likely. Brush only operated as an independent pottery for about one year before the fire. According to my book (Sanfords') during that time the company concentrated primarily on utilitarian items.
