Hello Everyone, I am very happy to be here, I'm new to this site. I travel often to Japan and have found myself drawn to Japanese pottery, and I am getting quite a lovely collection together. I am by no means an expert, I just know what I like. It would be nice though, to become more knowledgeable about Japanese pottery and I hope that I can meet people here who also love pottery!

I did recently find this piece, in an old box wrapped up in a sock! I found it in Japan, but I'm not sure if it is Chinese or Japanese if anyone has any ideas that would be great!

Welcome Ash, hopefully someone on here is knowledgeable about Japanese pottery. As I have a number of pieces myself! Hallmarks are difficult to find because there are so many. I think your piece is a Bizen Ware piece but that's just a guess. Here's a link.

Welcome, Elaine! That is a beautiful piece! I suspect done by a very talented studio potter.

Yes, I think you are right, which will make it very hard to identify.

    Hi Ash,
I am thinking that your piece is either a Tea ceremony vase or a flower vessel, simply because of it's shape. I am married to a Japanese lady, that's why I have an interest in anything Japanese. :D Plus, their art, their culture and everything about the Japanese people is so above board and they are such humble people, I find everything about them attractive. I used to collect and sell Japanese Internment Art but I stopped after my father in law passed away in 2015. Here's a video, you may find of interest. There are a number of them on flea markets and antiques stores as well as modern Bizen Ware artists on youtube. ;)
