Thanks! It was from a store in Philly that's now long gone! We drove up to the address on Saturday and it's now the Independence Visitors Center :(

If anyone can help find when the store closed I would appreciate it- I have a pic of the building but don't know when they closed their doors. The store was SNYDER HARRIS BASSETT. They were around in the late 1800s.

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

Just did a little looking and didn't find much. You could ask people at the Free Library of Philadelphia. They probably have sources that can answer the question.
Here is their Ask A Librarian page: https://libwww.freelibrary.org/contact/

If you scroll down a little on this Bassett genealogical page you will find a paragraph taken from the New York Times of 20 December 1900, reporting that Snyder, Harris, Bassett & Co. was in financial trouble:

But they may have survived it, I don't know.

Thanks! We found when the Snyder partner passed, but that was it so far.

Here's the old pic of the building:

Nice find. Great condition and good clean surfaces to make a functional piece like you did. Looks to be a perfect size and height to serve as your coffee table.

Thirds on preferring the pooch. Looks like she knows she's cute too. Cool box too.

Great job with placing the box. It looks perfect there.

Love that building too! I want to take my window air conditioner, put it under my arm, and go back in time and live there. Of course, there might not be a place to plug it in.....:)

This is why I love showing these finds to you guys- the seller is a nice person, and I have bought many things from them over the years. But had I not bought this on Friday aftn, it would have been left outside for a huge rainstorm that came through the area Friday night :( I realize that it has survived for 100+ years before me, but it just bothers me when I see people neglect things like that.

Here's the 1878 invoice that I got off of eBay and came in the mail today! 20240807_175623.jpg

That has to be a wholesale invoice with those prices for 1878. I have to admit to wanting to see the striped overalls and wonder if they were made for railroad workers.

I thought exactly the same thing on the overalls!!

And yes, they apparently were a wholesaler. I think that is why their name does not pop up so quickly among Gimbels, Wanamakers, and Strawbridges.

Oh how I miss Gimbels. My mom and grandmother would take me on a drive to Valley Stream on LI to that Gimbels.
I sometimes find things at estate sales with the Gimbels name on the box.
My friend used to work at Strawbridges in NJ.
    I feel old now. LOL

If it helps, I was taken to the Wanamakers Xmas show as a kid in the 80s!
