I think this is either for a Chatelaine or a watch fob but I'm not sure. And, I definitely don't know what it does. It's gold filled with a lot of wear to the corners and edges.

    Anyone have any ideas?

The monogram looks more masculine than feminine.

If it's a watch fob, I was thinking it might have held tobacco tools.

    Are there any moving parts?

Only the part it hangs from.

I'd think it held tobacco tools too, or some such. These days I'd keep hand sewing needles in it if it's long enough. It might also work for tiny jeweler's screwdrivers.

If that center disk does not move in some way, have to think something like a cabochon stone has been lost there, as well as a cap for the end. I also lean toward smoking related. Don't pipes require tamping & cleaning?

Someone invented the USB thumb drive rather too early, and hung it on their watch chain to wait for the technology to catch up.

Trouble is, now no one has a watch chain. Shame, because as a USB stick it looks great.

If the only moving part is the part it hangs from, how would you keep anything from falling out the open bottom?

Matches maybe? To avoid the bulge in the suit caused by a matchbox? No striker needed, just strike them on the butler's head, right?
