I also have a bronze ? religious item looking for your help to identify it

This was a lovely item that was included in a lot box purchased at auction. It appears to have been attached to something made of glass as it has glass stuck in the bottom of it.

 

I'm not clear where the mentioned glass fits in?

What's the size? It looks like a processional cross to me (probably Mary and John the Baptist at the bottom), but I don't recognize the style of the cross.

edit: okay, I haven't been Catholic for a long time... probably not processional with Mary and John the Baptist... not sure, someone more recently Catholic will likely be along in a bit.

I just felt a cold chill -- pretty sure it was my (long dead) very Catholic grandmother.

 

It is a home 'Calvary', with Mary and St John the Evangelist at the base, as Jivvy said. They mourn Jesus' death, but he will rise again.....
Calvary was the name of the place where Jesus was crucified.

Nah, I long ago learned that ignoring her was the smartest/safest path.

 

The size is approximately 6-8 " tall , the round thing on the bottom is appx 2-3" in diameter and the piece itself if about a .25"thick.

 

What were they used for and do you have any estimates as to age? Thanks for your insight.

Home devotion, prayer. Some people had a small home altar, others just had one of these on a cabinet among display things like their best vases, etc. Some people still have that, and I see similar items a lot in my area.
