Have had this awhile and was doing some research. It bears the Iparmuveszeti Vallalat paper label from the Hungarian Arts and Crafts Collective. I had pretty much convinced myself that this was the work or design of Laszlo Demeter (Dömötör László ötvös). However, on close examination I find a stamped signature, Szabo Gy. I find a Hungarian artist named Bela Szabo Gy. but he is not particularly known for metalwork.

I really don't know anything about Hungarian language conventions. In all instances of the name Gy. I have found, it is with a period. In most cases, Szabo Gy. appears with one other name attached such as in Bela Szabo Gy. but I have found just Szabo Gy. on its own in contemporary usage. Is Gy. an abreviation and, if so, for what? Any other help in figuring this out? Thanks!

Here are some pics of Laszlo Demeter's work for comparison ...... In particular, the long narrow tray is most similar.

It's an abbreviation for the common given name György, the Hungarian version of George.

Remember that in Hungarian, family names come first, and gy is treated as a single letter, like ll in Spanish, so you can't abbreviate György as G.

Note too that the family name in Hungarian is Szabó; a search on Szabo might turn up different results.

Thanks. This makes sense. I didn't realize that Gy is treated as one letter. I was able to find him right off once I had György. Seems to be a prominent Hungarian sculptor.
