Featured How to remove glue from etched glass?? - Napoleon III banquet lamps

Evening all.

Picked up a pair of Napoleon III banquet lamps from a vendor, only to find when they arrived that someone a while ago had glued the shades to the mounts.

Glue appears to be rather old, and the only way I can think to safely separate the two is if I can somehow dissolve the glue without damaging the etched glass?

I have purchased some acetone to soak them in, but didn't want to do anything until I got some advice.

First time posting, so apologies if I have posted in the wrong section, thought this was probably a "glass" kind of question

Aceton being very volatil, I'd imbibate some cotton pads, put in place and wrap tightly with aluminium foil to keep the pads wet.
No harm for the glass or the metal, but only active on solvants sensitive glues...

Work in a well aerated zone, and not near of any ignition!!!

Welcome to the board. The acetone will not affect the frosted portion of the glass shade.

 

It however will not do YOU any good. If you're going to mess with it, be sure it's in a well-ventilated area.

I don't know what others will think of this, but you might try a hair blower to see if the glue will melt with a bit of heat.

Or it could simply be water soluble.

 

So moreotherstuff, turns out it was just water soluble!

further to that, turns out the shades aren't a light pink as they have looked in all the photos and were sold, they were just heavily coated in smoke and grime! which is great for me since I would have preferred for them to be white.

I'll post a pic once they are all cleaned up.

Now what to do with a litre of acetone...

they certainly are very similar. Our children have the habit of throwing balls / anything solid around the house, so good to know there is a means of replacing them if they break them

 

If you want to have fun, acetone takes the coating off of old nasty fake pearls. The glass ones will stand the treatment and they're often better looking without the paint. Now what to do with the other 750ml of acentone....

 

Use it to clean silver. If you have no silver, buy some so you can finish the bottle of acetone.

 

Acetone is good for getting stubborn old grungy labels off glass and ceramic I've found.
