Good Afternoon, I hope I am posting my question in the correct place. I just joined today.
I have a book shelf that was hand made by a friends Grandfather back in the 1920's. I realize his Grandfather was not a famous furniture builder, which would make a difference in the value. How would you put a fair value or determine a fair value of this item?
Thank you in advance for any information and/or knowledge you can provide.

I would compare it to other similar oak bookcases. Doesn't look particularly home made and the style is more typical of 1900.

@verybrad - could it have been a kit?
Or possibly made from instructions found in one of the magazines. I think early 1900s. You see this style fairly often.

    Book cases are always useful.
There is damage on the front bottom - right side of picture. That will bring the price down some.

Could have been made from a pattern by a talented amateur or a superior student in a shop class. The notches cut in the verticals for shelf adjustment bars are a kind of tricky thing to do without proper equipment. Also would have required a pretty good molder to do all the beading, profile work, and tongue and groove back boarding. These are things that were pretty common on factory built furniture. Would think it beyond most amateurs unless they had access to a good shop.

Hadn't noticed the missing piece at the bottom. This will impact value quite a bit. I bought a similar bookcase in rough condition for $15.00 at auction. Sold for $75.00 after putting some work in to it. Thought it could have been worth more but had no takers at $95.00 over several months.

Just looked at 20 pages of oak bookcases. This is the closest I could find but not all that similar other than being an open bookcase of similar size from about the same time period...... Sold for $70.00.

Here is the site with another 2500 bookcases if you want to keep looking......

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

Despite the damage it has a nice look. And has been mentioned, bookshelves are still very useful. So it should sell, even if not for a high price.

I hope your friend keeps it. If I had something made by my grandfather, even if from a kit, I would.
