Makanudo There is no such thing as simple.Simple is hard.

I bought a vintage 1912 framed photo. It is wide panoramic photo of a city and its edges are a bit inverted and the photo got some kind of yellowish tone.
It is 15x60cm(60cm is width), which was surprising to me. I didnt know they could make such photos in that day.
Anyway, I would like to know how to clean, restore and preserve it.
    Any help is appreciated.

    Hi,
It looks like the photo was varnished and now the varnish has turned yellow. An art conservator could possibly remove the top layer of varnish without destroying the photograph. That is a tough call. I have seen where they have removed the photo from the varnish from the back and not caused any damage but...... It is a job I would not have the patience for anymore. My crowning piece of work was restoration of a crushed dyed Easter egg of my sister when I was 22. The egg was in over 75 pieces. I have never tried anything like it again.

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

Is there glass over the photo? Could some of the stain be on the glass? I agree that you should ask a professional conservator about this kind of cleaning of a photo.

    There was no glass.
I shall be contacting museum here, maybe even donating it, if it proves to have a historical value that I suspect.

What just struck me is that it seems to be in colour under this yellowish hue.
I know that photo is somewhere 1905-1914 so where the colour came from!?
It is signed, but when I search the photographers name I get nothing.
Can someone try and search for some data on this man who was a photographer in Austro-Hungarian empire beginning of 20th century:
    Carlo Gelleticu or Gelletici

Early colored photos were colored by hand. The color was not in the emulsion.
