Hi all. I have this faded version of Hiroshige's Crossing the Abe River at Fuchu that I got last summer at a garage sale in the US PacificNorthwest, along with other tourist-y Asian stuff (some porcelain, some other prints, etc).

    The frame is 16" x 20" and the image is 8.5" x 13.5".

Does anyone have advice on dating or evaluating this print?

(Full disclosure, I have no delusions of grandeur about this piece!)

    Thank you!

Dating such prints is difficult. There may have been many reprint editions, using the original blocks, reworked blocks, or copy blocks, as well as more modern reproductions. If you can recognize traditional Japanese paper, that would be a start.

Here are other examples of the same image. You can click on each and find details such as dimensions, which you can compare with yours, and date:

My experience with Japanese prints that were framed in the mid century era is they were often laid down. Might want to pull it out of the frame. Yours has quite a bit of foxing. You might find some other marks that will help or you might find it has been trimmed.

Yes, condition will be a significant factor in any valuation.
