I have a framed metal picture / art work, identified on the back as a Highland Icon. There is also an auction house label identifying it as a '19th Century. Framed Moose Plaque' but no location for the auction house. It seems indeed to be a picture of a moose but are there moose in Scotland? There is no other information on it that I can find. No marks. I may take the back off at some stage but wanted to see if anyone knew something about it beforehand. As you can see, there is some tarnish on the plaque and on the frame. The plaque is set against what looks like dark red silk. Size of plaque by itself - 4 in x 7 in. Size of item including the frame - 9 in. x 11.5 in. The backing board is nailed down with very small nails. I am having huge trouble uploading any photos in spite of having resized them about ten times - will try again tomorrow. Any thoughts?

Question: your picture sounds very like Landseer's, "Monarch of the Glen." Not a moose, but a stag. ?? As a 'Highland Icon,' it has been done to death, poor thing!

Hadn't thought of that, and yes, it is a Highland icon.
ALittle, is it this one? The original Monarch of the Glen:

Finally!!! One photo only, sorry, and not the best but it will give you an idea. I will put more up if you'd like to see them. On closer inspection it is a stag. In the style indeed of the Monarch of the Glen - thank you, silverthwait, for that. I should have thought of it. Would the plaque be silver on copper? And do we believe the C19th bit? I have googled endlessly and cannot find anything similar as yet.

Can't enlarge it enough to see details, die stamped and could be tin plated steel or silver plated copper.Try a magnet and see what happens.

Looks Moose to me! Deer horns are like fingers; moose horns like palms.

(A number of years ago, my brother was out for a solitary walk in the forest. He stopped be a large tree for a few minutes, to admire the scenery. Suddenly, he felt a warm little wind by his ear... Slowly he turned, to confront, at eye level, the mouth of a huge moose's head. For a few minutes, neither of them moved, and then, slowly, silently, the moose melted off, back into the forest.)

This does not run in the family. My brother is one of those people to whom things happen. Bizarre things. Strange things. Impossible things...

On even closer inspection, silverthwait, I am inclined to go back to the moose vote.
I understand the Highland icon bit but I'm not 100% sure those antlers are stag.
Irritating. Googling has not produced any info regarding early Canadian hunting silverplate plaques.

My brother is something of an animal whisperer. A bit of a Dr Doolittle. This moose would be trotting along behind him going But I love you. I love you. I'm not quite at the same level although I did meet up fairly closely with a dingo in the wild once.

It's a red deer/European elk, moose don't have antler tines like the deer on your piece.

Okay. I found a similar pair of framed plaques showing two stags fighting, made by WMF. Pricey. Now I do need to take the back off.
