    Hi,

I have a pair of genuine whales teeth. Would anyone know who much they might be worth?

Assuming the teeth are genuine, there are international and U.S. laws that restrict their sale. Do you have proof of their age?

There is a date enscribed on the side of one of them of 1734.

We will need to see photographs. There are many reproduction sperm whale teeth out there, some engraved with all manner of scenes and dates. For purposes of the law, you would most likely need separate documentation for the history of the teeth.

Hi @Castellrob01, Could you show CLOSE-UP images of the bottom of both teeth....where they were cut flat, please....that should tell us a fair amount as well....large images (but under 1 MB) will really help!!!! Thanks!!

Most of your images aren't large enough, even after clicking on the thumbnails, to tell much.....I WAS able to enlarge this one with the date on it somewhat......am thinking we will also need to see the apex (top) of the teeth as well as the bottom.....larger images!! I have not yet seen enough to convince me I am looking at real whales teeth, especially in the carving!!!

Thanks I'll post FULL SIZE for all!! Which YOU can do in the future by once you have all your images loaded and READY to post, CLICKING on the VERY TOP IMAGE which says INSERT EVERY IMAGE AS A FULL IMAGE!! The program will load them ALL FULL SIZE, instead of thumbnails....a lot of members use cell phones, and it's very difficult for them to see the thumbnails!! Thanks, in advance....now, we need others to chime in here!! @komokwa, @blooey, @kyratango, @Taupou and any others that I don't remember, please!!!

i'd like to have them in my hand, but from these pics only , I'm going to say they look like real teeth to me..

the etching and date ...may well be original.....but I can't be certain of that.

Can't tell from pics I'm afraid ..they do look a bit whiter than the teeth I've seen (which are a bit more ivory/yellow in tone), but that could just be the photos ...sorry not enough info for me to make a call.

Am thinking 30 years of life in Alaska gave me something, though I'm not sure a depressed immune system is the best thing to have these days.......but, as to these, they appear to be killer whale teeth and the scrim looks genuine, but beginner level. Laws are very restrictive these days; can't sell through commerce. Leave them to your children, nephews, nieces.

The OP is in the UK.

The laws on selling and possession of Scrimshaw are different to the US.

My city maritime museum has tons of it mostly not on display, the city was a whaling port since the 1590's.

I know a few avid collectors, they buy it from antique fairs.
One guy in my village has over 500 pieces.

We had another museum that had lots of whale bones and scrimshaw and other exhibits but Adolf and the Luftwaffe obliterated it.

It is now a car park with a secret fortune buried well below.
