Here's another find...I think Murano art glass

Discussion in 'Pottery, Glass, and Porcelain' started by Connie Osborne, Mar 13, 2017.

  1. But my question is after looking and doing research, What qualifies as Murano Glass? Seems like anything is identified as such with no proof. This vase does have a partial sticker on it but it is not identifiable to me, maybe some of you can recognize it. It is 13" tall, 7 " at the widest, 4.5 opening and base is 2.5. It is VERY heavy and the depth seems to be 3 layers with a clear layer on top. I also noticed that the flower like parts in there were often called or attributed to Millefiori, but again, this is just after looking for hours on ebay and google searches for something similar. I did my best to try ans capture the depth of layers on this piece, not an easy job! As always, THANK YOU! crysvs12.JPG crysvs13.JPG crysvs02.JPG crysvs04.JPG crysvs05.JPG crysvs09.JPG crysvs14.JPG crysvs12.JPG crysvs13.JPG crysvs02.JPG crysvs04.JPG crysvs05.JPG crysvs09.JPG crysvs14.JPG

Murano is in Italy. Italy does not start with a C.

  3. That is a reason i was asking about what constitutes the Murano description. As I looked on the web and ebay, not all that were described as Murano had a definitive reason why they were claiming it to be. Another reason I was asking if anyone can identify the sticker.

Typical made in China sticker. ???? Ltd. would be the import company. Can you make out any more of what is above Ltd?

  5. This is what I have, the picture, I can make out Crystal (almost) and then the L.T.D. This is how I found it. So far I have come up with maybe Fifth Avenue or Ajka that have crystal L.T.D. after them, but i can't find a sticker that is exactly like this.

For something to be "Murano" glass it needs to have been made on the Isle of Murano, Italy. And yes, people tend to put the Murano attribution on any glass with a certain look, regardless of where it was made, but that doesn't make it Murano glass. I agree with other's your piece is made in China. They have been making "Murano style" glass for a number of years. The quality has been increasing with their experience.

  7. Thank you so much for the explanation. That is why i come here, I would never want to say a piece is something that it is not. I really have looked for hours and the lack of real identification on some of these vases are terrible. So many people say Murano and no proof of such. Thank you for all this great info.

Millefiore is a decor. Im not sure if I can explain it with anybody making sense of it. So, I'll find a link that can describe it LOL

Short form, it's the "flowers" in the glass. Those are made from fused glass rods or "canes" and made into flowers. Those are then fused into the main body of the glass. The real stuff isn't that blurry, although the Chinese have gotten better at it. I've bought Chinese glass beads with the design in them deliberately, because I wanted the blurry designs. No self-respecting Italian firm would let those out the door.

    Millefiori translates to Many Flowers

Yellow is the imperial color of China. They tend to use a lot of it. Very bright yellow. Also their reds are very bright.
Although Italian glass does use yellow it does not tend to be as vibrant. Also anytime you see a grey bottom instead of polished glass bottom, you can pretty well bet against Italy.

Old Chinese millefiori is stunning - and some was supposedly exported to Murano.

  19. Thank you all so much. I would never be able to obtain even a bit of the knowledge that yall have given me by searching. I do appreciate everything. The hunt goes on...may have not been great this time, but you never know what will be found. I haven't had the time to take pictures yet, but I have a mercury mirror that I will also be asking about in the next few days...Thank you again!
