Hi everyone, I have this sweet silver overlay piece and I need to know what it is. I assumed a scent bottle but with the top and the wide opening I think it may not be.

The measurements are 2-3/4" tall with the silver top on, 2-1/2" tall with the silver top off, 1-1/2" wide across the bottom.

The glass top is frosted and so is the inside of the top, it fits perfectly. The hallmarks on the silver top are for Mauser Manufacturing Co. New York, 1887-1903.

So, is it a scent bottle or something else? Thanks for any suggestions :)

PS, the top is hollow so that also makes me think not a scent bottle. Maybe an ointment bottle???

Wonder if it could have been part of a set for traveling, this sort of thing:

The related page on the bottles themselves mentions that perfume bottles typically have a 'neck and shoulders shape', agreeing that yours not likely to be meant for scent. Could be for a cream rather than for something completely liquid.

    Smelling salts, perhaps.

Salve, balm, ointment or even medicinal powder.

You don't usually see this shape with an overlay.
    Price it high.

I'm liking the smelling salts hypothesis after looking through these:

Had thought maybe the mouth was too wide, but not if it also served as an air freshener in a room where gentlemen have been smoking.

Marie, they are all lovely! I'm a sucker for silver overlay - and for guilloche enamel!

    Do your research.
The silver overlay perfumes are priced in stores up around 95 - 125.
That atomizer is really cool. Look that up.
    The grey one maybe French.
The crystal back left may be Czech.

The gray one, pink one with the atomizer and the tall clear one on the far left are all marked Czech. The one next to the gray one with the gold decoration around the neck is marked French :)

Thanks again clutteredcloset49, I think I will revise my prices on a few of these.
