Hi, this painting is about 18 x 21 inches. I'm looking for any thoughts at all as to age, quality level, good descriptive words. I liked it and the price was right so I bought it, but I am not good with art. It's on canvas, would you say oil or acrylic? And subject, my first reaction was Chinese New Year parade - what do you think? Would you call it abstract? Any point in trying to ID the artist?

You can see I'm floundering - thanks for any help?

WHATEVER it turns out to be... I like it! Movement, color, emotion...
There are lots of savvy art experts here.
Meanwhile, my ol' man just made a pitcher of Margaritas, so I'll make this my research-venture of the evening! Salud!

The banner looks Chinese. If I were anything resembling an art expert (laugh here) I'd say 1970s Decorator or factory piece. Some of those were better than the art form would imply, and this might be one. I'd call it more expressionist than abstract; abstracts generally don't have recognizable figures or objects.

The clothes don't look like Chinese New Year garb at all.

I like the painting and think it's well done. I think I'd call it a "modern impressionist" painting.

I struck out completely! I felt fortunate to have an actual legible NAME, but...
    so far, no luck.

If it's a factory piece you'll never find anything on the artist.

Seems to be the case... I found a few Davids on this master list I have, but their styles were not even close to a match.

Thank you everyone for your comments, and loro-rico for your time spent researching. I looked myself using the name David and various search terms, but it's such a common name I didn't get far. Also I realized the artist is very likely not known, so not findable. Thanks again.

Can you make out the two words or name written in black at bottom of back of frame and underlined?

    Didn't even NOTICE that!!!!
Can you make it out, drg? Or can we get a close-up and take a look?

I don't see anything written on the frame. Where are you seeing it?

A bit faint but definitely writing on left half on bottom of frame, back side.

A quick Google Images search on those characters 農者天下之大本 suggests this is most likely ethnic Korean.

Thanks khl889. Springfld and loro, I have looked under bright light and magnification and don't see any writing on the back of the frame.

It is visible to me in the 4th photo down. May have just the right light and angle to show up in the photo and not in person. Two long words possibly separated by a short word.

I think this is what Spring is referring to.

It does kind of look like writing, but I think it could be the framer's name or a mark that was on the lumber used.
