Hi, I just got this Stiffel lamp at a garage sale. It is very tarnished and pitted so I’m hoping to clean it. But I can’t tell what this metal is. It looks like some silver metal covered in a yellow lacquer which peels off very easily. The metal is not magnetic. Can someone help me figure out what this is and how to clean it? I really appreciate your help.

    Hi Carolina,
It could be white brass. Stiffel was always made with the best materials. When the last of the Stiiffels living at home died they had a huge estate sale. Took place in Paterson NJ. I was lucky enough to get three lamps that were never sold, one of a kind. Two were sold brass and a white brass one. I love Stiffel lamps.

Greg, thanks for your response. I had no idea they made any with white brass. I have not found any images online. Would you recommend I remove the yellow stuff and polish it with a brass cleaner?

    Hi Carolina,
If it is coming off easily it must have been in a damp location. Mine never needed cleaning and no pitting until I moved down to the shore. The salt air does a number on brass and lacquer.

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

Welcome, Carolina -- You might want to re-post your question in the Metalware section. Some people (including me) don't think to look in the Introductions section for questions.
