I was told it was a William Williams circa 1746 coffee pot it is about 10" high and weighs about 800g. The silver stamps look a little off to me though. Any Ideas? Thanks. Robert. 110729690.jpg 110729693.jpg

Can you zoom in on the mark?

You can scroll down to 1746 in the display in this link to see what unworn marks for that year should look like.

Keep in mind that wear over such a long period of time will undoubtedly affect how such marks will appear now. I do not see even a smudged maker's mark in the picture you posted, so if it is somewhere else on the pot it would be nice to post a picture of that too.

I see a Lion Passant, a Leopard's head, and what looks like a date-letter, but no maker's mark.

The maker's mark may be somewhere else on the pot. They often were.

In some pieces, hallmarks were deliberately 'hidden' so as to not interrupt the 'look' of the piece. Try under the base, inside the lid, under the handle, etc...they really knew how to hide them in those days. On some really elaborate chased & repousse pieces, you could be searching for them for up to an hour...

    Hi Shangas,
I searched a covered cup for several years and gave up. Ten years later I was giving it a good polishing and there they were in a tiny crease on the inside of the cover.

I almost feel silly mentioning it as I'm sure you've noticed but there does seem to be a broken thumb rest on the handle.

The I for 1746 appears to be upside down relative to the other 2 punches, but it wouldn't be the first time I've seen that.

This is exactly what I'm talking about!! You can search for AGES, and never find them, and then suddenly - there they are!

I had the same problem with a silver snuffbox I bought once. It was BLACK with tarnish. Only after a LOT of polishing, did I finally find the tiny indentations showing the hallmarks.
