Help with Identification of Green Semi-Matte Pottery Vase

    Hi All,

I recently purchased 3 unmarked vases at the estate auction of an antique dealer and have been having fun trying to idenify them. So far I have identified two of them (Japanese Awaji Flambe Glaze and Weller Breton), but am currently stuck on this one.

It's a 7" tapered cylinder with a bulbous bottom. I guess I'd call the glaze semi-matte, green with brown streaks. Nice heft in the hand, feels like a quality piece.

Unmarked, the bottom is glazed but the clay appears white-ish.

While I don't have any idea how knowledgable the previous owner was, there was still a $375 hand-written price tag on the bottom, so they must have thought it was somewhat valuable.

My first thought was Fulper, but I have not been able to find an exact match.

Any thoughts or suggestions on how to research are much appreciated !

    GaleriaGila Hola, y'all!

I had a look-see but couldn't find information on your piece.
But... hola, and welcome to the Forums!
Lots of ceramics brainiacs here who may be able to help you.

Definitely not Fulper. I am thinking European in origin. Maybe Belgian or German. The thin edge probably rules out most American potteries.

Price tags can be very misleading. I've had many pieces with high values on the tags that I could not sell at even 1/3. Some dealers put unrealistic prices. Plus, what was "hot" before maybe dead "cold" now. On the other hand, I've found items with super low tags that I sold for many more.

I like the sleeping cat. Is that nephrite?

I'd take a stab at Frankoma. But that is just a WAG.

Have you checked Roseville Early Carnelian?

I'm with verybrad - too thin for most American makers including Roseville and Frankoma. Are you sure this isn't another Awaji vase?

Good thought on the Roseville Early Carnelian, I found an image of an Early Carnelian vase of similar color and style. However, it looks like the edge of the mouth is thicker in the photo. Thanks very much for the suggestion.

Hi Don, It's possible based on some online photos. I'm far from an expert on Awaji, do you know whether much of it is unmarked ?

No, just an assumption based on the other piece you bought at the same time. I apologize if I led you down in the wrong direction. I like Awaji but am a beginner in that area myself. I do love their glazes.
