    Hi Trip,
Try this hint. Take a burning candle and put it close to the hallmarks so the black soot covers it. Blow out the candle and set side. Take a piece of clear or frosted cellophane tape and cover the hall marks and push down firmly. Lift the tape and place on a white piece of paper (I use note cards) so when it is Id'd I can write on the back.
The marks show up under the tape. I learned this from the conservators at the MET in NYC. Besure to wash the soot off. Then you can scan the card and the hallmarks will really stand out.

Just a quick note to say I had no luck IDing the MSC mark either from the pic. I did see the Maltby, Stevens & Curtis mark like Shiloh did, as well as the MSC of Middletown Silver Co. Supposedly the Swedish silversmith Maria Schnierer Calmeyer uses MSC, but I couldn't find a pic of her mark and don't know if in a clover. I also looked for a matching MSG, M & C, etc... marks. I tried all the American and British references I could think of, but of course it could be Scandinavian or wherever also. It certain would help if we knew the following 4 marks/punches. Do try Greg's suggestion.

They look like British hallmarks to me. Funnily enough, I had some silver a month or two back with that same maker's mark. Never found out who it was, but I doubt it matters over much.

ha the most important crest tray mark is the least clear it looks like x or k .

BTW The MSC mark, the date letter is an E in a distinctive script. I looked at all the english citys "E"s and the closet I came was to matching E was Edinburgh 1734. Maybe it is fantasy mark

Leopard head is London, date probably 1978 or 79 if upper case script, 60 or 61 if lower. That's if you mean the cartouche is squared off at all four corners.

Did you notice the wee tray says KP SIlversmith? Looks like 1991.

thanks Bear "Did you notice the wee tray says KP SIlversmith? Looks like 1991." Duh, didn't noticed until you pointed it out. Obvious when magnified. The lot is so vast, but so far this knife set is my favorite piece vhstwoodbox1.jpg vhstwoodbox1a.jpg

Love the flatware chest. Looking at the spider web deco on the front reminds me of E G Webster? Are the utensils marked?

I love that little knife box. The motif is classically Regency. Nice collection of bits, that.

Hey Bear: I was going through the notes that accompanied the miniature collection I am working on (1000s of items) found the entries for the items marked like the tea set above "silver by C. J. Traill-Hill" Couldn't find any comparables though. Do you recognize the name?

Hm. No immediate bells ringing, but I'll fish out some older books, see if there's anytihng. Might be the dealer!

C.J. Traill-Hill was a miniaturist, not a silversmith exactly, and produced not only silver but furniture, etc.
