    Hi,
Hoping to get some ideas for shades and age of these two lamps.
#1 Not sure what type of shade would go on this adjustable lamp - it is 11"H to the socket and 6" across the base. It is heavy, so brass or bronze? Is there a name for this style of lamp?

#2 - made of lucite or acrylic, cloth cord, stands 8" to the socket. This is dirty but I'm hesitant to take it apart to clean. The label on the base has Lumitex Inc or Ind on it, they do make light products.
What kind of shade would go with this?
Any information on these would be appreciated.
    thanks for looking

The first one is a little desk lamp and the shade was likely brass-toned metal or colored glass. The second one... Wow! Art deco lucite and -- what? -- aluminum? As to shade, hum...

Another example from same era. Wow! Wow!

Thank-you Debora:) No aluminum, the rods in the centre are lucite also.
The first one you posted has a similar base to mine. I don't like the shade on that one at 1stdibs

Like it or not, it's original and gives you some idea of what would (most appropriately) suit your lamp. Geometric shape and height approximately height of base.

Cx - That first lamp is bothering me - the way the socket doesn't stay upright when you use the "adjustment feature" of the rest of the support. Like it's missing something? I could swear that the desk or student lamps of my youth (when this one was probably made?) had a second length of the support part attached where yours has the socket. Plus I don't remember a harp.

Maybe I'm misremembering. You get like that at my age. ;)

Closest I could find. And given vertical, think originally metal. Horizontal more likely to be glass.

Would call your first an articulated shelf or piano lamp. You would have seen these with a variety of shade configurations as mentioned above. Since yours has a harp, it would have had something pretty traditional on it. Probably more in fitting with colonial decor. A dark paper shade with a gold lining for example. Here is one with a tole painted metal shade.

It would have been meant to be used with the harp in a vertical position only. If it didn't have the harp, they generally looked more along the lines of this.

Your second one is a bit more difficult. I think something cylindrical or conical, possibly with some kind of graphic patterning. Would be nearly impossible to find an old one. Here is a more modern pair with a wide cylinder shade that looks good.

If keeping these for yourself, you should do what pleases you. Most lamps have lost their original shades along the way so there is no shame in not having something original. Besides, our sensibilities are a bit different than they were back then. You might not even like what the original shade looked like.

... from my youth bothers me also. Certainly needs another something under that socket. A lamp using a shade needing that harp would stick straight out and not be able to bend upwards. The first lamp Brad posted, green tole look, might do but still another something needs to be between the socket and its attachment to the lamp stem/stand allowing the socket to stand straight up. THe one Debora posted in reply #9 could never have a shade that used a harp like on the OP's. Really no bendable/fexible/articulate lamp using a harp can have the socket sticking straight out to the side. The socket would always need to stick straight up.

It might have had a brass banker's type lighting fixture originally similar to the following, which isn't much different from the 2nd example Brad posted except it doesn't have adjustment/locking levers at the joints. It has screw type adjustments at the joints like the OP's (Original Poster):

Thank-you brad and ladybranch for the links and information:)
I will probably keep the lucite one and hopefully find a shade I like and that fits.
The other I will see if I can find a metal shade that will work with this - I like the shade in the example Debora posted, now to find one.
bakers, from the example that ladybranch posted I now see where you would think a piece was missing - could very will be missing on this one but if I can find the right shade it should work out.

CX, I have a little brass one, sort of like yours, but it did not have a harp. I solved the dilemma of a shade by buying one of the clip-on type, that has a wire fitting to go over the light bulb. Mine stays upright, thanks to the little lever thing on the side.

This is my own desk lamp with scalloped shade, athough your's suggests this wouldn't be the shade you are looking for... .so to speak.
However I thought I would put my two bobs worth in as I love both of your lamp bases and hope you have some success in restoring them. :) 20170209_080737.jpg 20170209_080751.jpg

Thank-you for posting your lamps SBSVC and gen belli:)
SBSVC I'm not sure if the harp on mine is original but will take it off and (hopefully) be able to find a metal shade.
gen belli, your shade is great and would look wonderful on mine!
