    Hello,

I believe this is a military man by the markings on the back,
however I'm not 100% sure what I'm reading there lol

    Any opinions?

He has a nice gold button on his jacket.

    Thanks in advance! IMG_6675.JPG IMG_6677.JPG IMG_6678.JPG

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

I think the name on the top line looks like "Joseph Bryan." Could be something else, though.

In the online Catalogue of Connecticut volunteer organizations is the roster of Company E of the 10th Connecticut Volunteers. I quickly scanned down the 2 pages not seeing a George Digan or a Joseph Bryan. Maybe one of you can spot a name.

    Company E roster is on pp. 382 - 383.

Here are links to the history of the 10th CT Volunteers during the CW. The 10th was organized in Hartford and mustered in on Oct 22, 1861, and mustered out on Aug 15, 1865, in Virginia.

Didn't we have another pic involving the 10th CT Volunteers a few months ago?

And also, is it possible that if he substituted for somebody else he may not be on an official list? Without looking this up, I think the substitution meant that he was paid to substitute for another soldier. I can't remember how that worked.

To me the last name is probably Bryan... while the first name seems less clear.

I'm pretty sure that the substitution (in place of a man who was drafted) would have resulted in the new fellow's name appearing on the muster rolls.

I see "Joseph" as his first name. No better idea of surname though.

Scantic, as Susan said, it seems to me we discussed another photo of yours in the past that was also a volunteer unit? Is it possible both photos came from the same source?

I'm guessing this photo was taken after the war, and the button is some sort of veteran's designation. This might even be a wedding picture.

I remember a recent discussion about a daguerreotype of the guy from Vermont who was a captain, but don't remember one about a Connecticut volunteer. But I could have missed something.

Hello! I do remember that, but this one was just purchased so it didn't come with the one a few months ago. This one came with about 20 other tintype photos from an ephemera auction.
