Hi everyone, just a quick question. What is this, an ashtray?? The only marks I see on the bottom are three numbers (997) and then possibly another mark but can't make it out. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks  IMG_2735.jpg IMG_2736.jpg IMG_2738.jpg IMG_2737.jpg IMG_2739.jpg

Warming dish. You pour hot water into it and put the cork in. This keeps the plate warm.

If you had enough lit cigarettes in there, you may be able to warm up a small side dish, in lieu of warm water.

It would be a pain to get them all out again though.

Heated baby plate/bowl or baby warming dish is what they're called on internet. Who knew? (Rhetorical.)

My sisters and I (all born in the 1950's) each had one of these at my maternal grandmother's house, (Apparently, my Mom had one when she was little, so Grandma got them for us, too.)

I can remember eating Campbell's tomato soup out of mine. (...and yes, the soup stayed hot!)

In the 1980's-early 90's, Mom got MY kids the newer, plastic versions - with an electrical plug to keep the food warm.

Here's a "sold" one from Limoges, said to be 1950's:

That made me remember, my younger brother had a heated dish that my mother used for his powdered cereal mixed with water when he was a baby. Yummmo. LOL

French Baby's Dish (Assiette a Bouillie) in Limoges Porcelain ,All French babies are served 'bouillie' for dinner for at least the first year or two of their life. This is a puree, usually of potatoes, meat and vegetables all smushed and mixed together with a little milk which makes a warm, filling and nutricious meal before bedtime...and French babies seem to love it!

And all French mothers have one of these dishes for serving baby this yummy warm 'glop.' The dish is hollow inside with a little hole at the top where hot water can be poured to keep baby's dinner nice and warm to the very end. There is a little stopper to fill the hole.
