Hmmmm, 16 stars -- do you think they represent colonies/states? What date would that number of stars represent for the admission of 16 colonies(?) into the USA? Just curious. ;)

With an airplane propeller on the front, I doubt that the number of stars has anything to so with the date. ;)

Older Civil Air Patrol Master Sergeant uses 6 chevrons in this arrangement; I think this is an old-style AF insignia (current AF would have 6 chevrons but the top one would be reversed, you probably know that) AF079_lg.jpg

You're absolutely right, Bakersgma -- there were definitely more than 16 "stars" (colonies/states) when Orville and Wilbur got their propeller wound up, so to speak. :D

Perhaps the 6 chevrons below is an older style? Here is a current CAP cadet master sergeant insignia. Note the 16 stars and propellor:

Yes...more googling would be required to nail it down, but I believe that in 1991 the insignia rules were revised; previously, master sergeant had 6 chevrons (bars), all below; afterward, only five bars below with one "rocker" above (I hope I have my terms correct).

So my best guess is that this is a pre-1991 Civil Air Patrol Cadet Master Sergeant insignia.

    Yes, 1991. from Wikipedia:
"The year 1991 also saw the last major change to the enlisted rank insignia. In October 1991 General McPeak and Chief Master Sergeant of the Air Force Pfingston announced that the senior NCO tier would have new chevron layouts... The change in senior NCO chevrons was the first since chevrons came into being in 1948. Until that time, Master Sergeant had been composed of six inverted chevrons (six down) with none pointing up, Senior Master Sergeant six down with one up and Chief Master Sergeant six down with two up."

After 1991 Master Sergeant had only 5 below, with one up; Senior 5 below, 2 above; Chief, 5 below, 3 above.

And I suspect the 16 stars refer to the 16 "achievements" in the CAP Cadet program. To advance through the ranks, a cadet must complete the next achievement; each achievement consisting of several tasks.

    Wow! Thank you!
I'm at a loss to know how I didn't find some of that info.
None now nor recent past on eBidet.
    I'll give it a shot. :)

Chief Master Sergeant of the Air Force Pfingston

It was the daily beatings the young Mr Pfingston received in school for the spelling of his name that braced the lad for the ardous climb through the ranks to Chief Master Sergeant of the Air Force.

I wonder, did he pronounce his name with the P or without it? How many times would he have said 'The P is silent, as in swimming'

How often did he get mail addressed to P. Fingston?

How many times would he have had to say 'Look under 'P' '

Did he remain an enlisted man all his career because the officers found the concept of an officer called Pfingston too hilarious to bear?

....and had Chief Master Sergeant Pfingston been agonizing over the layout of the chevrons on NCO insignia since 1948? 43 years, he'd not had a night's sleep without dreaming of chevrons.... right-side up or inverted; how many of each...
