I wonder if it could be church furniture? Can we get a pic of the inside ? I also get an English 30s feel off this one too.

Nice and not too big as so many are.

funny you should mention church furniture. we thought it looked like a confessional. The stamp on the back indicates Oct 1957. Its in awesome shape. Ill get pics of the inside and post as soon as possible
has a hanging area on the right and shelves to the left

I would have thought this earlier (30s as Johnny suggests). However, the stamp would seem to tell the story unless it is on a replaced plywood backing. It is English oak in the so-called tudor-bethan style. While it looks pretty churchy to our eyes, it is just as likely home furniture. The English members here could probably tell you more about this than I could. Seems that styles we saw go by the wayside were produced a lot longer there.

Not church, but Tudorbethan 1950s indeed. Old Charm were the foremost makers of these. There's another company - I've one of their chests - but the name escapes me.

It's an odd thing about styles. Some pseudo trad ones hung on, whilst the fashion crowd were channelling people like Robin Day and that whole atomic thing, too. My take is that having been bombed to perdition and lost so much, people went a bit nostalgic.

While we didn't have the bombings and structural loss, we did turn back to traditional. Here, post-war design manifested itself in a resurgence of interest in Colonial American furnishings.

Looking at those hinges, they're very like the ones on my repro Tudor chest, but it's so covered in Stuff that I can't lift the lid to look at the maker's plaque inside!

    The other possibility is Jaycee.

Definitely, the photo from the inside will help to provide more information about this armoire.
